At Bloomberg CityLab’s 2026 summit in Madrid, Bloomberg Philanthropies and Johns Hopkins University announced the Mayors AI Forum, a new collaborative platform that will bring together leading city officials to share best practices and shape responsible AI implementation in urban services.
The 12th annual Bloomberg CityLab summit in Madrid served as the backdrop for the unveiling of the Mayors AI Forum, a joint initiative of Bloomberg Philanthropies and Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg Center for Government Excellence (GovEx). The forum aims to create a peer‑learning network for mayors tackling the rapid integration of artificial intelligence into public and private city systems.
Founding members include mayors from a diverse set of global capitals—Bogotá, Boston, Buenos Aires, Kyiv, London, Madrid, Nairobi, San Antonio, San Francisco, and Tokyo. The announcement was attended by Michael R. Bloomberg, JHU alumnus and founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies, New York City’s 108th mayor, London Mayor Sadiq Khan, and San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones.
GovEx will provide the forum’s operational backbone, enabling mayors to:
The timing of the forum reflects broader economic forecasts that AI could contribute $13 trillion to the global economy by 2030, while simultaneously displacing a notable share of jobs. City leaders therefore face a dual challenge: leveraging AI to enhance efficiency and citizen engagement, and mitigating its disruptive socioeconomic effects.
By convening mayors alongside data scientists, technologists, and policy experts, the Mayors AI Forum seeks to narrow the gap between high‑level AI standards—often set by corporations and legislators—and the on‑the‑ground implementation that directly impacts residents. The initiative aligns with GovEx’s existing programs, such as the Bloomberg Philanthropies City Data Alliance, which funds AI prototype development, and City AI Connect, a global forum for municipal data leaders.
In the words of Johns Hopkins President Ron Daniels, “Local leaders have a critical role to play from shaping policies to advancing innovative new approaches to city services and civic engagement.” The Mayors AI Forum is positioned as a practical conduit for that role, offering a structured venue for cities to collectively navigate the ethical, economic, and technical dimensions of the AI frontier.
