The El Dorado County Fair is a four-day celebration of community, agriculture and the arts that takes place each Father’s Day weekend in Placerville. Built around the theme “Where Tradition Meets Today,” the 2024 edition runs June 13-16 and draws roughly 55,000 visitors to the 200-acre fairgrounds at the foot of the Sierra. The event is rooted in the county’s rural heritage: 4-H and FFA youth still parade prize steers, goats and lambs through the livestock pavilion, while competitive divisions welcome everything from heirloom tomatoes and home-brewed beer to quilts and drone photography. Free agricultural education tents let guests try hand-milking a goat or planting a pollinator seed strip to take home.

Evening programming shifts to the Grandstand, where ticketed concerts feature national acts; the 2024 lineup pairs country headliner Clint Black with regional rock and tribute bands, followed by Saturday’s demolition derby and Sunday’s traditional PRCA rodeo. Three performance stages rotate local musicians, dance troupes and martial-arts demos throughout each day, ensuring continuous free entertainment. A 30-carnival-ride midway operated by Butler Amusements anchors the west end of the grounds, flanked by 25 food booths that funnel fair staples—funnel cakes, tri-tip sandwiches, deep-fried Oreos—into the crowds.

Creative culture is highlighted inside four climate-controlled exhibit halls. Juried art shows display oil, watercolor and digital works; a heritage barn houses antique tractors and blacksmith demonstrations; and a makers’ pavilion invites children to build bristle-bots or screen-print a souvenir T-shirt. New for 2024 is an e-sports lounge where teens compete in sanctioned Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. tournaments projected on a 20-foot screen.

The fair positions itself as a low-cost family outing: children 10 and under are admitted free, and a $20 pre-sale wristband covers gate entry plus unlimited carnival rides for any one day. Parking is complimentary, and shuttles run from outlying lots. Sustainability initiatives include solar-powered LED lighting on midway rows, water-bottle refill stations and a partnership with local farms to compost food-scrap waste.
