The International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) is Pakistan’s premier tri-service defence expo, held biennially at the Karachi Expo Centre under the patronage of the Ministry of Defence Production and with full support from the Pakistan Armed Forces. The 2022 edition, staged from 15-18 November, attracted 300-plus exhibitors from 32 countries and 53 official delegations, making it the largest gathering of its kind in South Asia. Designed as a hybrid event, IDEAS combined a 55,000 m² indoor-outdoor exhibition with a high-level seminar stream, live-fire demonstrations at the Korangi Creek range, and a concurrent digital platform that extended access to global participants unable to travel. The target audience spans defence procurement agencies, military attachés, original equipment manufacturers, system integrators, R&D institutes, and emerging tech start-ups seeking joint ventures or export contracts. The seminar segment, themed “Evolving Dynamics of Aerospace, Land & Naval Technologies: Opportunities & Challenges”, featured keynote addresses from the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, the Chiefs of Army, Naval and Air Staff, and the Federal Minister for Defence Production. International panellists included the defence ministers of Turkey and Azerbaijan, the CEOs of EDGE Group UAE and ASFAT Turkey, and the heads of delegations from China North Industries Corporation, Rosoboronexport, and MBDA. Parallel sessions dissected counter-drone systems, cyber-electronic warfare, indigenous frigate programmes, armoured vehicle modernisation roadmaps, and the integration of AI in command-and-control networks. Networking lounges, B2B matchmaking desks, and daily technology briefings facilitated 1,300-plus pre-scheduled meetings; organisers report preliminary MoUs exceeding USD 1.4 billion in air-defence systems, maritime patrol upgrades, and joint production of loitering munitions. The exhibition halls were organised into nine national pavilions—Pakistan, China, Turkey, Russia, France, Italy, Germany, South Korea, and the UAE—each showcasing live demonstrations of armoured vehicles, UAVs, radars, and naval propulsion systems.
