Shenzhen Creative Week’s anchor exhibition, staged in the city’s Futian district, turns the entire urban ecosystem into a living laboratory for design. Running for six days each May, the 2023 edition gathered 42,000 trade visitors and 1,200 exhibiting studios across 30,000 sqm of repurposed warehouse and rooftop space. The format is deliberately hybrid: daylight hours are trade-only, while twilight sessions open to the public through guided tours, live-streamed panels and outdoor projection mapping. 2024 confirms the same structure, with a parallel digital twin accessible via WeChat mini-program and English-language Zoom rooms.

Curators frame the show around five “material futures”: eco-alchemy (bio-based polymers, mycelium composites), digital weave (AI-generated textiles, 3D-printed embroidery), post-carbon mobility, ageing-friendly interfaces, and circular luxury. Each future is anchored by a flagship installation: British studio The Unseen is creating a colour-shifting algae wall; Japanese architect Kei Atsumi presents a 12-metre bamboo lattice that harvests airborne micro-plastics; Chinese tech-giant Tencent’s design arm premieres an AI co-creator that sketches furniture in response to biometric data collected on-site.

Morning keynotes pair global heavyweights with emergent local voices. Confirmed for 2024 are Yves Béhar discussing open-source assistive devices, MaterialDriven founder Sascha Peters on certified recycled carbon fibre, and OpenDot’s interaction lead Chiara Ligiéro unveiling a blockchain system for garment repair credits. Afternoons are segmented into 35-minute “micro-salons” where startups pitch directly to manufacturers; winners receive six-month residency inside Shenzhen’s Huaqiangbei supply-chain hub. A new 2024 track, “Design for 65+”, invites gerontologists to brief product teams on inclusive packaging and wearable diagnostics.

Evening programming is experiential: a zero-waste gala catered by Dutch chef Piet Jan van der Zanden, a drone-swarm performance coded by students from Tsinghua University, and a silent auction of one-off prototypes whose proceeds fund ocean-degradable plastic research. Visitor registration is free for students and seniors, RMB 180 for professionals; accreditation includes unlimited metro rides and a tasting passport to 20 pop-up coffee labs inside the venue.
