The Whooping Crane Festival is a celebration of the annual return of Whooping Cranes to their wintering habitat at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge in Port Aransas. The event has been held annually since 1996 and marks the 29th anniversary in 2026. It takes place from February 19-22, 2026, in Port Aransas. The festival is a unique opportunity to see the world's last naturally occurring population of Whooping Cranes in their natural habitat. The event is presented in partnership with the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve, the University of Texas Marine Science Institute, and the International Crane Foundation. The festival program includes boat tours, photography workshops, and field trips, which can be booked in advance. A comprehensive guide, Wings of Winter, is available for download, offering information about the Whooping Crane, a map of the best birdwatching sites, and points of interest.
