World Seafood Shanghai, staged 28-31 Aug 2024 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre, is Asia’s largest dedicated seafood trade fair and the regional flagship of the global “Seafood Expo” family. Organised by SIAL and Diversified Communications, the 2024 edition occupies 80,000 m², unites 1,600 exhibitors from 42 countries and attracts 42,000 professional visitors. The show is strictly in-person and business-to-business; entrance is restricted to trade, retail, food-service, distribution and hospitality professionals who pre-register with proof of industry status.

The event is built around three parallel zones: frozen and fresh seafood, processing and packaging machinery, and aquaculture technology. Within them, themed pavilions spotlight certified sustainable wild catch, value-added ready meals, premium sashimi-grade tuna, and live shellfish logistics. A “New Product Showcase” theatre gives 200 brands three-minute slots to debut marinated ready-to-eat octopus, plant-based shrimp analogues, high-pressure processed crabs and IQF seaweed salads. Concurrently, the “Seafood Processing Automation Alley” demonstrates AI graders, laser pin-bone removers, nitrogen tunnel freezers and recyclable monofilm for tray sealing.

Education is anchored by the two-day Seafood Forward Summit whose 2024 agenda is “Traceable, Low-carbon, High-value”. Confirmed speakers include WWF China seafood lead Dr. Wen Xu on revised CITES listings, IFFO director general Petter Johannessen on fishmeal circularity, Alibaba Freshippo procurement VP Guan Huimin on retail QR-code traceability, and DNV seafood supply-chain auditor Per Askeland on EU deforestation-proof documentation. Panels will dissect China’s new chilled-chain standards, Russian pollock H&G price volatility, and the ascent of Vietnamese pangasius in canteen catering. Technical briefings cover rapid ATP hygiene testing, vanadium-free aquafeed and blockchain integration with China’s “Blue Food” dietary guidelines.

Networking is rounded out by the Seafood Excellence Asia awards, a buyers’ club that pre-matches 1,200 importers with exhibitors through an online portal, and evening tasting receptions hosted by Norway, Chile, Scotland, Japan and Hainan provincial authorities. Visitor services include free shuttle buses from Pudong and Hongqiao airports, on-site cold-storage and an English/Chinese match-making app.
